We rented a Class C RV based on a Ford E-Series chassis from El Monte RV. During our trip, we experienced two dangerous tire tread separations. The first incident occurred on the third day of our trip on the highway. The right rear tire's tread detached while driving at moderate speed (~55–60 mph), causing the tire to explode. This vehicle was made by Ford as a partially complete vehicle and converted to 4 wheel drive by Quigley Motor Company Inc. The Quigley torque arms installed appear to commonly fail from some of the earlier years and a design change has been made (from C-channel arms to tubular). The design and construction of the C-channel torque arm (connecting the front axle to the frame of the vehicle) is prone to failure from low cycle fatigue near the welds. ONE MORNING LEAVING MY DRIVEWAY, THE BRAKE PEDAL SANK TO THE FLOOR. THE STEEL BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED THROUGH AT THE SITE WHERE IT WAS SUPPORTED BY A METAL CLIP ON THE FRAME. ONLINE FORA DESCRIBED THIS AS A KNOWN FLAW TO FORD FOR MANY YEARS BUT WHICH FORD REFUSES TO REPAIR. THE DEALER REFUSED MY REQUEST AND I HAD THE REPAIR DONE - POORLY - AT A TIRE SHOP FOR AROUND $300.

I NOTICED THE DRIVER SEAT BELT BUCKLE NOT COMPLETELY LATCHING AND BEING ABLE TO YANK THE BELT OUT OF THE BUCKLE. THERE WAS NOTHING STUCK IN THE BUCKLE, IT WAS JUST BROKEN. I WAS DRIVING 75 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATE 69 BETWEEN SHEPPARD AND CLEVELAND TEXAS AND THE VEHICLE STALLED AND DIED IN THE INSIDE LANE. WHILE DRIVING ON A RURAL COUNTRY ROAD LESS THAN 40 MPH I HAD A CATASTROPHIC LOSS OF STEERING. ALTHOUGH I IMMEDIATELY BRAKED, THERE WAS NO DIRECTIONAL CHANGE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. LESS THAN 10 DAYS PRIOR, I WAS TOLD BY A FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THAT THE STEERING WAS 'A LITTLE LOOSE.' THERE WAS NO MENTION THAT I COULD HAVE SUCH A LOSS OF STEERING OR THAT IT NEEDED IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. UNFORTUNATELY, I LIKENED IT TO 'YOUR TIRES/BRAKES/BELTS ARE A LITTLE WORN.'
